What is Art Therapy?

Art & Soul Art Therapy Studio uses a psychodynamic and family systems approach to therapy. This means the primary focus is on:
  • The relationship between the client and the therapist
  • The dynamics between the client and his/her primary relationships (family, spouses, friends)
In addition to this focus, various forms of art-making are used to deepen the therapeutic process. The art allows the client and therapist to creatively explore the specific issues in a way that may feel less formal and forced than talk therapy alone. Given that each client is unique, art interventions are created to suit the specific needs of each individual.
At Art & Soul Art Therapy Studio, there is an open invitation to engage in spontaneous art-making, facilitating open, creative expression at the client's discretion.

Art Assessment
Art projects may be suggested in order to gain insight into the client's perspective of:
  • The problem - "draw what happened"
  • Family conflict - "draw a family portrait"
  • Sense of self - "create a collage that introduces yourself"
These are just a few examples of how the art creates an opportunity for a client to communicate information. This type of therapeutic assessment may feel less invasive and offer a higher level of comfort than traditional verbal assessment techniques.
